The Perfect Diet

Well, now that I have your attention - Stop searching for the perfect diet. I know that isn't what you expected to read, but hear me out. Much like you, I have been on a quest for knowledge. And my quest for knowledge has led me through numerous college courses on nutrition, clinical nutrition, physiology and metabolism. Countless hour digging through research and articles and talking with every expert I could put myself in contact with. Do you want to know what I have learned? I have learned that 98% of people make "Dieting" far more complicated than they really need to. No matter what you may be doing now or have done in the past, you always seem to searching for a less painful, time consuming plan that requires less self-discipline than the current eating plan you have now.

Robert AtkinsYou have to realized that certain diets appeal to certain people based on personal preference. For example, the Atkin's Diet may seem appealing to you if you are a big meat eater. Or the Zone Diet may be more to your liking if you are a salad and vegetable lover. Or perhaps you might like the bland, highly structured and strict type of a diet because it eliminates the guess work and decision making.

I firmly believe that this obsession with finding the 'Perfect' diet is what is actually preventing you from finding it. If whatever diet you have chosen isn't producing the results as quickly or as effectively as you had expected, then the diet is to blame, not the standards you have set for yourself.

Now, by 'Perfect', I mean a diet that is tasteful, allows for plenty of food to be eaten, sheds body fat quickly, builds a muscular / lean body, is painless and "kicks in" quickly. Not to mention that this perfect diet can't be too strict. And if you wanted to break away from the diet from time to time, or even most of the time, that is ok as well. All of this without it slowing down your amazing progress.

HungryEverything has a price tag. If you have accumulated more body fat than you really want, and wish to get rid of it, there is going to be a price to pay. The price may be working a little more on the treadmill, or skipping those friday night fish frys. You might even have to go hungry from time to time. No matter what method you chose to get rid of that extra body fat, it will require some discipline, sacrifice and pain. I would be lying if I told you any different and anyone who tries to tell you other wise is down right misleading you.

When it comes right down to it, losing a significant amount of body fat, or weight for that matter is going to take some hard work. If you aren't burning off enough calories, dieting for a long enough period of time or a combination of these two, then your diet isn't going to work. Period. It isn't because you haven't found the right diet, Treadmillor that you have been cursed with an unbelievably slow metabolism. It isn't because you don't have enough knowledge about nutrition or the little nuances of "Dieting". It isn't because you are eating a ratio of 50-30-20 instead of 40-30-30 or 20-50-30 or even10-80-10. It isn't because you haven't found the right supplement, taken enough pills, bought the right tea extracts, hit a plateau and no, your body doesn't have a 'set point'.

If you are carrying more body fat than you would like you are going to have to start budgeting your calories a little more wisely. You will have to budget them in to meals that you can eat consistently, frequently and for an extended period of time. You must budget your calories in to a proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Now before you get confused, I didn't say the magic ratio, I said a proper ratio. If you and I both had a calorie budget of 2000 calories, you got your 200 calories from whoppers and fries, Frieswhile I got my 2000 calories from chicken breast and broccoli. I can guarantee you that my body fat losing efforts will go a bit more smoothly than yours simply because my calories were in a better and proportionate ratio. If you can do all of these things and do them on a consistent basis, you will be successful.

Now you have a pretty good idea of what I have learned in my years in dealing with dieters as a personal trainer. And basically, that is, the more people set out to learn, the more confused they become and the less success they see.
